Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre - Charlotte Brontë 3.5

Yes I really liked this book but it wasn’t something amazing for me, may be because neither I got too much involved with Jane nor I got smitten by Mr. Edward Rochester. Perhaps the huge expectation which I had built did this to me or the constant comparison which I had been doing all along between Jane Eyre and Lucy Snowe (of [b:Villette|31173|Villette|Charlotte Brontë|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1320412741s/31173.jpg|2033945]) did this?? I am unable to make out. I found [b:Villette|31173|Villette|Charlotte Brontë|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1320412741s/31173.jpg|2033945] agreeable book than Jane Eyre in so many ways. It seems strange but this what I felt. I also did change my stars for [b:Villette|31173|Villette|Charlotte Brontë|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1320412741s/31173.jpg|2033945] upgrading it from 4.5 to 5 where as for Jane Eyre it is 1.5less than that i.e 3.5!!

Jane is a likeable character no doubt in that, the way she expressed uprightly towards rights and wrongs from the very beginning, really held my attention. She did go through so many hardships and humiliation in her life which is rather difficult to explain in just words, but I could feel it. I felt one of the main reason Jane Eyre became what she was, was because of her best friend Helen Burns. Helen for me will remain as one of the most unforgettable character who actually taught Jane how to be mentally strong in her life in every ups and downs.

But I could not understand why Jane fell for Rochester so instantly. Although I did not like his behavior towards her at times. He kept on playing with her emotions so many times but she was still besotted by him. I had to comfort myself defending Jane giving reasons like may be because she had not seen some one so attractive or she never had any male companion till she met him. Because a strong women like her falling for him so quickly was a bit hard to digest. And then after she agreed to marry Rochester a bit too quickly and found out that he had a wife already which made her leave him even after the reasons he gave was again hard to digest.

Anyway apart from all these, what made me like Jane through-out and what made me complete this books was her feminism, her stubbornness in achieving her independence and the practically thinking which she had at that age and time was really appreciable and of course Charlotte Brontë writing!! This is an incomplete review according to me but I am unable to write anything beyond this.
